Venus Flytrap is a small carnivorous plant with a low rosette of flat green leaves. Each leaf ends in hinged lobes that form an insect-catching trap. When triggered, the lobes close around suitable prey. Its unusual feeding method makes it popular with curious growers, but it needs intense direct light and mineral-free water. It suits anyone prepared to keep the growing medium wet and avoid normal houseplant fertilizer.

Light requirements
Venus Flytrap needs bright, direct light measuring 250 to 1000 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹. Strong exposure is essential for compact growth and healthy traps.
Provide 6+ hours of direct sunlight each day.
Place it within 2 ft / 60 cm of a south or southwest-facing window, with an unobstructed view of the sky.
Weak winter light may require Grow Lights when daylight hours are shorter. Too little light leads to weak, pale growth.
A PAR meter or PAR meter app can measure photosynthetically active radiation as PPFD (μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹).
Watering
Keep the Venus Flytrap growing medium wet at all times. Unlike most houseplants, it should not dry between waterings during active growth.
Use only room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water. These options avoid the dissolved minerals found in many tap water supplies.
Grow it in a pot with drainage holes, then stand that pot in a tray or saucer.
Maintain 1 in / 2.5 cm of water in the tray at all times during the growing season. Refill it before the tray dries out.
Do not replace this tray method with occasional light sips. Dry soil can damage foliage and traps, while unsuitable mineral-rich water can cause brown, crispy growth.
Soil
Venus Flytrap needs a low-nutrient, moisture-retentive medium intended for carnivorous plants. Use a specialty organic potting mix formulated for carnivorous plants rather than normal enriched soil. A pot with drainage holes allows tray watering.
For a DIY mix, combine 1 part Coir with 1 part Pumice.
Do not add compost, Worm Castings, or ordinary fertilizer to the medium.
Feeding
Do not fertilize Venus Flytrap. It obtains nutrients from the insects caught by its traps, so normal houseplant feeding is unnecessary. Avoid liquid fertilizer, slow-release products, and enriched potting soil, since added nutrients can damage this carnivorous plant.
Temperature & humidity
Venus Flytrap prefers a temperature range of 50 to 80 °F / 10 to 27 °C. Humidity can range from 40 to 70%. Good light and correct water remain essential across that range. Avoid placing the plant beside drying vents.
What to expect
Venus Flytrap reaches maturity in about 2 to 4 years. A mature plant can measure 15 to 30 cm / 6 to 12 in tall. Its eventual spread is also 15 to 30 cm / 6 to 12 in.
Varieties & cultivars
D. muscipula ‘Dentata’: This classic form has deeply lobed traps with red coloring.
D. muscipula ‘Akai Ryu’: Bright red traps are lined with long, pointed teeth.
D. muscipula ‘Fangs’: The traps are narrow and elongated, with especially prominent teeth.
D. muscipula ‘Coquillage’: Rounded traps form an unusual pouch-like shape.
D. muscipula ‘Triffid’: This compact cultivar produces short, stocky traps with coarse teeth.
