Air Plant is a small bromeliad that forms a tidy rosette without growing in soil. Its narrow, silvery-green leaves absorb moisture and nutrients from the air. The foliage turns red as flowering approaches, adding seasonal color. It suits open displays, mounted arrangements, and small spaces. Care is simple if the plant receives bright filtered light, regular soaking, and enough airflow to dry fully afterward.

Light requirements
Air Plant prefers bright, indirect light at 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹.
Position it 5 ft / 1.5 m from a south, west, or east-facing window, without an open view of the sky.
Filter direct sunlight with a sheer curtain. Strong sun can dry and scorch the thin leaves.
Too little light may slow growth, delay flowering, and weaken the rosette.
Check photosynthetically active radiation as PPFD (μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹) with a PAR meter or PAR meter app.
Watering
Air Plant needs a complete soak rather than conventional soil watering. From spring through autumn, submerge the entire plant in rainwater for 20 to 30 minutes every week. Mist between soaking sessions if the foliage dries quickly.
After soaking, gently shake away trapped water and place the plant where air can move around it.
Let the rosette dry fully before returning it to a shell, terrarium, or display. Water held inside the crown may cause rot.
Curled, crisp leaf tips can signal prolonged dryness. Soft, dark tissue may indicate excess moisture or poor airflow.
Growth slows in cooler, darker winter conditions, so monitor drying time and avoid leaving the plant wet.
Air Plant does not need soil because its leaves take in water and nutrients. It can be mounted on driftwood or shells, or displayed inside a terrarium. Keep the base uncovered and allow air to reach the whole plant. Do not pack moss or wet material around the rosette, since trapped moisture can cause decay.
Spray Air Plant with an organic fertilizer formulated for bromeliads every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Apply a light, even coating while growth is active. Avoid heavy feeding or concentrated fertilizer, which can damage the leaves. Reduce feeding during winter.
Temperature & humidity
Air Plant tolerates a broad temperature range of 50 to 90°F / 10 to 32°C. Humidity between 40 to 60% is suitable when paired with good airflow. Higher humidity slows drying, while hotter or drier rooms may require more misting between weekly soaks.
What to expect
Air Plant reaches maturity in about 3 to 5 years. It may grow 6 to 8 in / 15 to 20 cm tall and spread 12 to 18 in / 30 to 45 cm. Growth is slow. Mature rosettes flower and may later produce offsets around their base.
Varieties & cultivars
Tillandsia stricta: Slender, wispy leaves form a graceful, curling rosette.
Tillandsia bulbosa: A rounded, bulbous base supports green leaves that redden during bloom.
Tillandsia capitata: This type forms a dense rosette with green or reddish foliage.
Tillandsia xerographica: Thick, silver-gray leaves make this a large and dramatic form.
Tillandsia ionantha ‘Rubra’: Green leaves change to a vivid red when flowering begins.
