African Mask Plant is a bold tropical foliage plant with broad, glossy, arrow-shaped leaves. Deep green surfaces highlight strong silver-white veins. Its upright form brings structure and contrast to an indoor collection. It suits growers who can provide steady moisture, warmth, humidity, and filtered light. Care is more demanding than for many common houseplants, especially during winter dormancy.

Light requirements

African Mask Plant grows best in bright, indirect light measuring 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹.

Watering

Keep African Mask Plant evenly moist, but never leave the mix waterlogged. Check several depths with a knitting needle or chopstick before watering. The surface can look dry while the lower mix remains wet.

Soil

Use a loose, moisture-retentive mix that still drains freely. Combine 2 parts organic all-purpose potting mix with 1 part bark and 1 part biochar. For a DIY blend, mix 1 part coir, 1 part pumice, 1 part bark, and 1 part biochar. Finish with a top dressing of worm castings.

Feeding

Apply an organic all-purpose fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Follow the stated dilution rate and apply it to moist soil. Do not feed heavily during winter, when African Mask Plant is not actively growing. Excess fertilizer can damage roots and leave salts in the mix.

Temperature & humidity

Maintain 65 to 80 °F / 18 to 27 °C and avoid cold drafts or sudden temperature swings. African Mask Plant prefers humidity between 50 to 60%. Warm, humid conditions support larger leaves and reduce dry edges. Keep it away from heaters and air-conditioning vents.

What to expect

African Mask Plant usually needs 2 to 3 years to reach maturity. Indoors, it can grow 2 to 3 ft / 60 to 90 cm tall and spread 1 to 2 ft / 30 to 60 cm. Growth is moderate during warm months and much slower in winter.
