Spotted Air Plant is a clump-forming epiphyte that grows without potting soil. Its green to grayish-green leaves form a neat rosette and absorb moisture through their surfaces. In early summer, mature plants can produce bright red or pink flower spikes with blue flowers. This compact species suits mounted displays and small indoor collections. It is easy when given filtered light, weekly soaking, and enough airflow to dry properly.

Light requirements
Spotted Air Plant needs bright indirect light at 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹ PPFD. A PAR meter or app can help measure the site.
Placement: display it 5 ft / 1.5 m from a south, west, or east-facing window.
Do not give the rosette a direct view of the sky. Filter unavoidable sunlight with a sheer curtain.
Too much light: leaf tips can bleach, dry, or scorch.
Too little light: growth slows, flowering may decline, and the plant can remain wet for too long after soaking.
Watering
Soak the entire Spotted Air Plant in rainwater for 20 to 30 minutes every week from spring to autumn. Mist between soaking sessions if the leaves dry too quickly. Because there is no soil, inspect the rosette and inner leaves rather than testing a potting mix.
Submerge the whole plant so water reaches the base and all leaf surfaces.
After soaking, let excess water drain from the rosette and provide good airflow.
Water trapped around the base for too long can encourage rot.
Too little moisture may leave the leaf tips curled, brittle, or crisp. Rainwater is the specified choice for regular soaking.
Soil
Spotted Air Plant does not require soil. Its leaves and epiphytic growth habit allow it to live on a support instead of rooting in a potting mix. Mount it on driftwood or shells, or place it in a terrarium. Keep the base open to airflow, and avoid packing damp material around the rosette after watering.
Feeding
Spray Spotted Air Plant with an organic fertilizer formulated for bromeliads every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Follow the package strength suitable for air plants. Do not overapply fertilizer or let concentrated liquid remain trapped deep in the rosette.
Temperature & humidity
Keep Spotted Air Plant within 50 to 90 °F / 10 to 32 °C. Avoid cold drafts while the leaves are wet. Humidity of 40 to 60% is suitable. Balance moist air with good circulation so the rosette does not remain wet after soaking.
What to expect
Spotted Air Plant grows at a slow to moderate rate and reaches maturity in 3 to 5 years. Depending on the form and conditions, it can become 4 to 20 in / 10 to 50 cm tall. Its eventual spread is also 4 to 20 in / 10 to 50 cm.
Varieties & cultivars
T. stricta ‘Bak’: This cultivar has the species' standard green foliage.
T. stricta ‘Red’: A reddish cast becomes especially noticeable while the plant is blooming.
T. stricta ‘Silver Form’: Dense trichomes create a silver appearance and help the leaves absorb moisture.
T. stricta var. disticha: This form has a distinct growth pattern and is native to the State of Paraná in Brazil.
