Silver Torch is a columnar cactus with slender silver-grey stems covered by dense, short white spines. Mature specimens may produce deep red-magenta flowers during spring and summer. Its upright form brings height without broad foliage, although older clumps eventually need substantial room. This cactus suits bright, dry indoor sites and growers who prefer infrequent watering. The sharp covering makes careful placement and handling important.

Light requirements

Silver Torch requires bright direct light at 250 to 1000 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹ PPFD. Provide 6+ hours of direct sunlight each day.

Watering

Let the soil dry completely before watering Silver Torch. Check moisture at multiple depths with a knitting needle or chopstick. Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.

Soil

Silver Torch needs a specialty organic cactus potting mix with rapid drainage. Dense soil that stays wet can damage its roots and stem base.

Feeding

Use an organic fertilizer formulated for cacti every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Apply it at the label strength for indoor cacti. Do not overfeed Silver Torch, and pause the routine in winter when water use and growth decline.

Temperature & humidity

Keep Silver Torch between 65 and 80 °F / 18 to 27 °C. Avoid cold, wet conditions around the roots. Low humidity of 10 to 40% suits this desert cactus. It does not require misting, and good airflow helps keep its dense spines dry.

What to expect

Silver Torch grows slowly and may need 5 to 10 years to mature. Indoors, established columns can reach 3 to 10 ft / 0.9 to 3 m tall. Mature clumps may eventually spread 3 to 6 ft / 0.9 to 1.8 m.
