Chinese Fan Palm
Livistona chinensis
Light requirements
Chinese Fan Palm grows best in bright indirect light of 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹. Filter strong sun before it reaches the fronds.
- Place it around 5 ft / 1.5 m from a south, west, or east-facing window.
- The palm should not have a direct view of the sky. Use a sheer curtain if sunlight would otherwise strike the leaves.
- Too much light: harsh direct sun may bleach or scorch the fronds.
- Too little light: growth slows and new fronds may be weak. A PAR meter or PAR meter app can measure PPFD in μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹.
Watering
Water the Chinese Fan Palm when the topsoil feels dry. Check the surface before each watering, but do not let the entire root ball remain dry for long. Its roots need both moisture and air.
- Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.
- Soak the mix until water runs from the drainage holes. Let it drain completely before returning the pot to a saucer or decorative planter.
- A pot with drainage holes is essential. Standing water can cause root rot, yellowing, and declining fronds.
- Water considerably less in winter, when growth is limited. Extended dryness may create brown, crispy leaf tips and edges.
Soil
Use a specialty organic potting mix formulated for palms. It should hold moderate moisture without becoming dense or waterlogged. Fast drainage and a pot with drainage holes protect the roots.
- DIY recipe: combine 2 parts coir, 2 parts coarse sand, and 1 part pumice.
Feeding
Apply an organic fertilizer formulated for palms every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Follow its stated strength and feed moist soil rather than dry roots. Stop or reduce feeding outside the active season, and never compensate for poor growth with extra fertilizer.
Temperature & humidity
Chinese Fan Palm prefers 65 to 85 °F / 18 to 29 °C. Protect it from cold drafts and direct airflow from heating or cooling vents. Maintain humidity between 40 and 60%. Moderate moisture in the air helps reduce dry or browned frond tips.
What to expect
This palm takes about 10 to 15 years to mature, so its indoor growth is slow. It may eventually reach 6 to 10 feet / 1.8 to 3 m tall. Allow room for a spread of 3 to 5 feet / 0.9 to 1.5 m.
Varieties & cultivars
- Livistona chinensis ‘Round Fan’: Its leaf segments are broader and more rounded than those of the standard form.
- Livistona chinensis ‘Minima’: This dwarf cultivar reaches only 3 to 4 ft / 0.9 to 1.2 m tall, making it useful in smaller rooms.
- Livistona chinensis ‘Kozan’: Deeply divided leaves have a distinctive bluish-green tone.
