Cast Iron Plant is an evergreen perennial that grows as a dense clump. Long, arching leaves have a deep green color, leathery texture, and simple upright shape. It is valued indoors because it tolerates lower light and occasional lapses in care better than many foliage plants. This slow, durable plant suits shaded rooms, quiet corners, and growers who prefer understated foliage over flowers or fast growth.

Light requirements

Cast Iron Plant tolerates low to medium indirect light at 50 to 150 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹ PPFD. It works well where stronger-light plants struggle.

Watering

Water Cast Iron Plant when half of the soil has dried. Use a knitting needle or chopstick to check moisture at several depths rather than relying on the surface. Choose room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.

Soil

An organic all-purpose potting mix suits Cast Iron Plant if it drains well and does not become compacted. Its roots tolerate some moisture, but they still need air and a pot with drainage holes.

Feeding

Apply an organic all-purpose fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Feed Cast Iron Plant on moist soil during active growth. Avoid overfeeding this naturally gradual plant, since excess salts can damage roots and leaf tips. Stop regular applications in winter.

Temperature & humidity

Cast Iron Plant prefers 60 to 75°F / 16 to 24°C. Keep it away from cold drafts and abrupt temperature swings. Humidity between 40 and 70% is suitable. It tolerates ordinary indoor air, although very dry conditions may contribute to brown leaf tips.

What to expect

Cast Iron Plant takes about 3 to 5 years to mature. It eventually reaches 1 to 3 ft / 30 to 90 cm tall. The clump spreads about 1 to 2 ft / 30 to 60 cm. Growth is gradual, with new leaves rising individually from the base.
