Century Plant is a large rosette-forming succulent with thick, sword-shaped leaves. The grey-green foliage has sharp tips and spiny edges, creating a bold architectural outline. It stores water in its leaves and tolerates long dry periods. Indoors, it suits a very sunny, spacious location where people and pets cannot brush against it. The plant can live for decades, but its eventual size demands planning.

Light requirements
Century Plant needs bright direct light at 250 to 1000 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹ PPFD. Give it 6+ hours of direct sunlight every day.
Placement: keep it within 2 ft / 60 cm of a south or southwest-facing window, with an unobstructed view of the sky.
Measurement: use a PAR meter or PAR meter app to assess photosynthetically active radiation.
Too much light: sudden exposure after shade may scorch the leaves, so acclimate the plant gradually.
Too little light: growth stretches and the rosette loses its firm shape. Grow lights can supplement shorter winter daylight hours.
Watering
Allow Century Plant soil to dry completely before watering. Test moisture at several depths with a knitting needle or chopstick. Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.
Soak the root ball until water drains from the holes below. Let all excess escape before placing the pot on a saucer or inside a decorative planter.
Drainage holes are essential. Wet soil is the main route to root and crown rot.
Water considerably less in winter because the plant is not actively growing. Do not water again while any part of the mix remains damp.
Slight leaf wrinkling can follow severe drought. Soft, translucent, or collapsing leaves are more likely to indicate excess moisture.
Soil
Use a specialty organic potting mix formulated for succulents. Century Plant needs rapid drainage and generous air space around its roots. The mix should become fully dry between waterings.
DIY recipe: blend 2 parts coir, 2 parts coarse sand, and 1 part pumice.
Choose a sturdy container with open drainage holes.
Feeding
Apply an organic fertilizer formulated for succulents every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Feed Century Plant only during active growth and stay within the stated dose. Avoid applying fertilizer to dry roots or continuing routine feeding through winter.
Temperature & humidity
Century Plant prefers 55 to 75°F / 13 to 24°C. Protect it from cold, damp conditions and rapid temperature shifts. Humidity between 40 and 60% is suitable. Good airflow and dry soil are especially important when humidity sits near the upper end.
What to expect
Century Plant does not normally flower indoors, so it technically never reaches maturity there. It is monocarpic, flowering once before dying, but it can live for decades with proper care. Eventual size is 3 to 6 ft / 0.9 to 1.8 m tall and 6 to 10 ft / 1.8 to 3 m wide.
