Azalea is an evergreen shrub grown indoors for its abundant spring flowers. Some plants produce a smaller second display in fall. Glossy, dark green leaves create a dense background for blooms in several colors. It suits cool, bright rooms where moisture and soil acidity can be managed. Warm, dry conditions shorten flowering, so it may require more attention than a typical foliage houseplant.

Light requirements
Azalea prefers bright, indirect light measuring 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹.
Place it 5 ft / 1.5 m from a south, west, or east-facing window, without a direct view of the sky.
Filter direct sunlight through a sheer curtain. Strong rays may scorch foliage and shorten the flower display.
Too little light reduces blooming and leads to weak, sparse growth.
Use a PAR meter or PAR meter app to measure photosynthetically active radiation as PPFD (μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹).
Watering
Water Azalea when the topsoil feels dry. Check moisture below the surface before adding more, since its root ball should not remain saturated or become fully dry. Careful watering is especially important while the plant is flowering.
Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.
Water thoroughly until excess flows from the drainage holes. Let the container drain completely before returning it to a saucer or decorative planter.
Water considerably less during winter when growth is limited.
Soggy conditions can cause root rot and leaf yellowing. Severe dryness may wilt flowers and create brown, crispy edges. Drainage holes are essential.
Soil
Azalea needs an acidic, well-drained growing medium. Use an organic all-purpose potting mix amended with an organic soil acidifier. For a DIY blend, combine 3 parts coir with 1 part pumice. Add an organic soil acidifier, then top dress with worm castings. Avoid alkaline, dense, or poorly drained soil.
Feeding
Apply an organic fertilizer formulated for ericaceous plants every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Feed Azalea during active growth and apply fertilizer to damp soil. Reduce feeding outside this period. Do not use products that raise soil pH or apply more than directed.
Azalea prefers cool conditions between 50 to 70°F / 10 to 21°C. Maintain humidity from 40 to 60%. Keep it away from heaters, hot windows, and dry drafts. Cooler temperatures help flowers last longer, while moderate humidity reduces dry leaf and bud edges.
What to expect
Azalea normally reaches maturity in 2 to 3 years. Indoors, it can grow 2 to 4 ft / 60 to 120 cm tall and spread 2 to 4 ft / 60 to 120 cm. Growth is moderate, with the main flowering display usually occurring in spring.
