Arrowhead Plant
Syngonium podophyllum
Light requirements
Arrowhead Plant accepts low to medium light between 50 to 150 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹.
- Place it 8 ft / 2.5 m from a north, east, or west-facing window.
- It suits a low-light position where you can comfortably read a book without artificial lighting.
- Strong direct sun may bleach or scorch its leaves. Very dim light can slow growth and weaken variegation.
- A PAR meter or PAR meter app can measure photosynthetically active radiation as PPFD (μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹).
Watering
Keep Arrowhead Plant consistently moist, but never soggy. Check moisture at several depths with a knitting needle or chopstick. This helps prevent watering based only on a dry-looking surface.
- Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.
- Water thoroughly until excess runs from the drainage holes. Let the container drain completely before returning it to a saucer or decorative planter.
- Water considerably less during winter, when the plant is not actively growing.
- Waterlogged soil can cause root rot and yellow foliage. Allowing the mix to dry for too long may cause wilting and crispy edges. A pot with drainage holes is essential.
Soil
Arrowhead Plant prefers a loose, rich mix with reliable drainage. Combine 2 parts organic all-purpose potting mix with 1 part bark and 1 part biochar. For a DIY blend, use 1 part coir, 1 part pumice, 1 part bark, and 1 part biochar. Top dress with worm castings.
Feeding
Apply an organic all-purpose fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Feed Arrowhead Plant during active growth and add fertilizer only when the mix is moist. Reduce or stop feeding in winter. Too much fertilizer may burn roots or leave salts around the pot.
Temperature & humidity
Arrowhead Plant prefers temperatures of 60 to 85°F / 15 to 29°C and humidity between 60 to 80%. Keep it away from cold windows, drafts, heaters, and air-conditioning vents. Warmth and higher humidity support fuller leaves and reduce dry, brown edges.
What to expect
Arrowhead Plant usually matures in 2 to 3 years. It can reach 1 to 2 ft / 30 to 60 cm tall and spread 12 to 18 in / 30 to 45 cm. Growth is moderate to fast, especially when its vining stems receive support.
Varieties & cultivars

- S. podophyllum ‘Red Emerald’: Deep green leaves are marked by reddish veins.
- S. podophyllum ‘Tricolor’: Each leaf may combine green, cream, and pink.
