Aluminum Plant is a compact evergreen perennial with bushy, upright growth. Its green leaves carry bright silver markings that resemble brushed metal. Stems may spread or droop as they lengthen, making the plant useful in pots or mixed displays. It is easy to maintain under stable indoor conditions. Regular pinching keeps growth dense, while filtered light preserves the strong contrast in its patterned foliage.

Light requirements
Aluminum Plant prefers bright, indirect light between 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹.
Position it 5 ft / 1.5 m from a south, west, or east-facing window, without a direct view of the sky.
Filter unavoidable sunlight through a sheer curtain. Harsh direct rays can fade markings or scorch leaves.
Too little light leads to long stems, sparse growth, and weaker silver coloring.
A PAR meter or PAR meter app can measure photosynthetically active radiation as PPFD (μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹).
Watering
Water Aluminum Plant when the topsoil feels dry. Check the mix below the surface before adding more water, since moisture may remain around the roots. Try to avoid both long dry spells and constantly wet soil.
Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.
Water thoroughly until excess flows through the drainage holes. Let the pot drain before returning it to a saucer or decorative planter.
Use considerably less water during winter, when growth slows.
Waterlogged roots may rot and cause yellow leaves. Extended dryness can wilt the plant and create crispy edges. Always choose a pot with drainage holes.
Soil
An organic all-purpose potting mix provides a suitable base for Aluminum Plant. It should remain lightly moist but drain before the roots become waterlogged. For a DIY blend, combine 3 parts coir with 1 part pumice. Top dress the surface with worm castings. Use a pot with open drainage holes.
Feeding
Apply an organic all-purpose fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Feed Aluminum Plant while it is producing new growth and the soil is moist. Reduce or stop feeding during winter. Excess fertilizer can burn roots and leave damaging salts in the potting mix.
Temperature & humidity
Aluminum Plant grows best at 60 to 75°F / 15.5 to 24°C. It prefers humidity of 60% or higher. Protect it from chilly drafts, dry heaters, and air-conditioning vents. Warm, humid, stable conditions help keep the leaves full and reduce brown, crisp margins.
What to expect
Aluminum Plant generally matures within 2 to 3 years. It reaches about 1 ft / 30 cm tall and spreads 6 to 9 in / 15 to 23 cm. Growth is moderate to fast during warm weather. Pinching the stem tips helps maintain a compact, bushy form.
Varieties & cultivars
Pilea cadierei ‘Minima’: This dwarf cultivar reaches only 4 in / 10 cm tall. Its leaves are smaller and its growth is more compact.
Pilea serpyllacea: Tiny green leaves with silver veins create a dense, low mat suited to terrariums or hanging baskets.
Pilea nummulariifolia: Round, glossy green leaves carry silver markings along trailing stems. It is also called Creeping Charlie.
Pilea depressa: Oval, dark green leaves with purple undersides cover creeping stems. It is also known as Baby Tears.
