Madagascar Palm is a succulent rather than a true palm. It develops a thick, swollen caudex that forms its trunk, with sharp spines along the surface. A crown of dark green leaves grows at the top. Its dramatic upright shape suits a bright floor position, but it needs careful handling, strong direct light, and room to reach a substantial indoor height.

Light requirements

Madagascar Palm needs bright, direct light at 250 to 1000 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹ and at least 6+ hours of direct sunlight each day.

Watering

Allow Madagascar Palm soil to dry completely before watering. Check several depths with a knitting needle or chopstick, since the surface may dry before the center. Water considerably less during winter when the plant is not actively growing.

Soil

Use an organic succulent potting mix with fast drainage. Madagascar Palm stores water in its thick trunk, so dense soil that stays damp can damage the roots.

Feeding

Feed Madagascar Palm with an organic succulent fertiliser every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Use the strength directed on the label. Do not apply extra fertiliser or continue routine feeding during winter dormancy.

Temperature & humidity

Madagascar Palm prefers temperatures from 65 to 86 °F / 18 to 30 °C. Its ideal humidity is 40%. Warm, relatively dry indoor conditions suit its succulent growth better than cool rooms or persistently humid air.

What to expect

Madagascar Palm takes 8 to 10 years to mature, so its indoor growth is slow. It can eventually reach 6 ft / 1.8 m tall. Its mature spread remains much narrower at 1 to 2 ft / 0.3 to 0.6 m.
