Macho Fern is a large, clumping fern with long, bright green fronds that curve downward as they mature. Its bold size creates a fuller display than compact indoor ferns. It works best where the arching foliage has room to spread without being brushed. This easy fern suits growers who can provide steady moisture, indirect light, and space for a broad mature plant.

Light requirements
Macho Fern prefers medium to bright indirect light at 150 to 200 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹.
Set the plant 6 ft / 1.8 m from a south, west, or east-facing window.
Keep the fronds from having a clear view of the sky. Filter unavoidable direct sun through a sheer curtain.
Excess light can scorch the broad fronds. Too little light may weaken growth and thin the clump.
Check photosynthetically active radiation with a PAR meter or PAR meter app, measured as PPFD (μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹).
Watering
Keep Macho Fern soil consistently moist, but do not let it become soggy. Test moisture at different depths with a knitting needle or chopstick. Large fern pots may stay wet below the surface. Water considerably less in winter when growth is not active.
Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.
Water the full root area until excess runs through the drainage holes. Let it drain completely before returning the pot to a saucer or decorative planter.
Drainage holes are essential because stagnant moisture can cause root rot.
Never allow the entire root ball to stay dry. Drought can produce wilted growth and crispy brown frond edges.
Soil
An organic all-purpose potting mix works for Macho Fern if it holds moisture without becoming waterlogged. The large root mass also needs air and reliable drainage.
Make a DIY blend from 3 parts coir and 1 part pumice.
Top dress the container with worm castings after potting.
Feeding
Apply an organic all-purpose fertiliser every 2 to 4 weeks from March through October. Follow the labelled dilution rather than increasing the strength. Do not keep feeding Macho Fern through the slower winter period.
Temperature & humidity
Macho Fern grows within a broad temperature range of 50 to 80 °F / 10 to 26 °C. It prefers humidity from 40 to 60%. Keep the plant away from strongly drying air that can brown its long fronds.
What to expect
Macho Fern matures in about 2 to 3 years and grows at a moderate pace. Its eventual height is 3 to 4 feet / 0.9 to 1.2 m. The broad clump can spread 2 to 3 feet / 0.6 to 0.9 m.
Varieties & cultivars
N. biserrata ‘Teddy Jr.’: This dwarf cultivar reaches only 2 feet / 0.6 m tall. Its fronds are shorter and finer.
N. biserrata ‘Macho Fern Compacta’: A dense, bushy cultivar with slightly shorter fronds than the regular Macho Fern.
