Wax Plant is a climbing or trailing vine with thick, glossy leaves that have a polished look. Mature plants can form rounded clusters of sweet-smelling, star-shaped flowers. The flexible stems may be trained on a support or allowed to trail. This easy houseplant appeals to growers who want lasting foliage with the chance of fragrant blooms. It performs best with bright filtered light and careful, moderate watering.

Light requirements
Wax Plant prefers bright, indirect light from 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹. Strong filtered exposure supports firm foliage and improves the chance of flowers.
Place it 5 ft / 1.5m from a south, west or east-facing window.
The leaves should not have a direct view of the sky. Filter unavoidable direct sunlight with a sheer curtain.
Harsh sun can scorch the glossy leaves. Too little light may slow growth and prevent flowering.
Use a PAR meter or PAR meter app to measure photosynthetically active radiation as PPFD (μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹).
Watering
Water Wax Plant when the topsoil feels dry. Its thick leaves retain moisture, so the deeper potting mix should not remain wet for long periods.
Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.
Water thoroughly across the root ball until runoff exits through the drainage holes. A pot with open drainage is essential.
Let the container drain completely before placing it on a saucer or inside a decorative planter. Standing water can promote root rot, while severe drought may wrinkle leaves and produce crispy edges.
Water considerably less in winter because the vine is not actively growing. Test the soil before each watering instead of relying on a calendar.
Soil
Wax Plant needs a loose medium that drains well and still holds modest moisture. An organic all-purpose potting mix is suitable when used in a container with drainage holes.
For a DIY recipe, blend 3 parts Coir with 1 part Pumice.
Add Worm Castings as a top dressing. Keep the mix airy rather than pressing it firmly around the roots.
Feeding
Apply an organic all-purpose fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Use the recommended strength and apply it after watering. Do not overfeed Wax Plant to force blooms, and suspend regular fertilizer use during the slower winter period.
Temperature & humidity
Wax Plant prefers temperatures between 60 and 80 °F / 15 to 26 °C. Keep humidity around 40 to 50%. Stable indoor warmth suits the vine well. Protect it from cold drafts and direct air from heating or cooling vents.
What to expect
Wax Plant reaches maturity in about 2 to 3 years. Its eventual height is listed as 1 to 2 ft / 30 to 60 cm. Mature growth can spread 12 to 18 in / 30 to 45 cm when trained or allowed to trail.
Varieties & cultivars

H. carnosa ‘Tricolor’: Also called ‘Variegata’, this cultivar combines green, white, and pink on its leaves.
H. carnosa ‘Krinkle Kurl’: Known as the Hindu Rope Plant, it has tightly curled foliage and clusters of pink flowers.
