Flamingo Flower is an upright tropical plant that naturally grows as an epiphyte. It has broad, glossy leaves with a clear heart shape. Colorful spathes rise above the foliage and provide its main indoor display. This plant suits someone who can offer bright filtered light, an airy root mix and steady moisture without leaving the roots waterlogged.

Light requirements

Flamingo Flower prefers bright, indirect light at 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹.

Watering

Water Flamingo Flower once the topsoil feels dry. Test the surface with a finger, then water only when it no longer feels damp. The root zone should stay lightly moist during growth, but it must never remain saturated.

Soil

Flamingo Flower needs an open mix that holds some moisture but drains freely. Amend 2 parts organic all-purpose potting mix with 1 part bark and 1 part biochar.

Feeding

Give Flamingo Flower an organic all-purpose fertiliser every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Use the label strength and apply it to damp soil. Do not feed more often to speed flowering, and pause during the less active winter season.

Temperature & humidity

Maintain 65 to 80 °F / 18 to 27 °C for Flamingo Flower. It prefers indoor humidity between 50 and 70%. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops. Air movement is useful at higher humidity, but do not place the plant in a harsh draft.

What to expect

Flamingo Flower takes about 2 to 3 years to mature and grows at a moderate pace. Indoors, its eventual height is 1 to 2 ft / 30 to 60 cm. It can spread 12 to 18 in / 30 to 45 cm.
