Dumb Cane is a tropical perennial valued for its broad, patterned foliage. Depending on the selection, its leaves combine green with cream or white. The bold markings brighten rooms without requiring direct sun. It develops an upright, leafy form that can become a sizable floor plant. Grow it only where its toxic foliage will remain safely beyond the reach of children and pets.

Light requirements
Dumb Cane prefers bright indirect light at 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹. You can confirm this PPFD range with a PAR meter or PAR meter app.
Position it about 5 ft / 1.5 m from a south, west, or east-facing window.
Keep the plant from having a direct view of the sky. Filter unavoidable sun with a sheer curtain.
Too much direct light can scorch the large leaves or fade their patterns.
Too little light slows growth and may reduce variegation. Turn the pot from time to time for balanced growth.
Watering
Water Dumb Cane once the topsoil feels dry. Check the surface before watering rather than following a fixed calendar, since drying speed changes with light and season.
Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.
Water thoroughly until the excess leaves through the drainage holes. Allow it to drain fully before setting the pot back on a saucer or inside a decorative planter.
Use considerably less water during winter when growth is reduced.
Persistently wet soil can cause root rot. Letting the root ball remain dry too long can produce drooping foliage and crispy edges. Drainage holes are essential.
Soil
Dumb Cane needs a rich but airy mix. Amend 2 parts organic all-purpose potting mix with 1 part Bark and 1 part Biochar. For a DIY blend, combine 1 part Coir, 1 part Pumice, 1 part Bark, and 1 part Biochar. Finish with a top dressing of Worm Castings and use a well-drained pot.
Feeding
Apply an organic all-purpose fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Use the labeled strength and feed only when the soil is moist. Do not overfeed Dumb Cane, since excess fertilizer can damage roots. Pause routine feeding through winter.
Temperature & humidity
Dumb Cane grows best at 65 to 75 °F / 18 to 24 °C. Protect it from cold air and sudden temperature swings. It prefers 50 to 60% humidity. Dry conditions may brown the leaf edges, while warm, moderately humid air supports healthy foliage.
What to expect
Dumb Cane can mature in 1 to 2 years under suitable indoor conditions. Its eventual height is 3 to 6 ft / 0.9 to 1.8 m, with a spread of 1 to 2 ft / 0.3 to 0.6 m. It grows relatively quickly during the active season.
