Desert Rose is a succulent shrub with a thick, swollen base called a caudex. Glossy green leaves grow from its branching stems. Trumpet-shaped blooms appear in pink, red, or white. Its sculptural form and colorful flowers make it an appealing indoor specimen. It suits growers who can provide strong sun, careful watering, and a warm location.

Light requirements

Desert Rose needs bright direct light at 250 to 1000 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹. A PAR meter or PAR meter app can measure this PPFD level.

Watering

Let the potting mix dry completely before watering Desert Rose. Check moisture at several depths with a knitting needle or chopstick rather than judging only the surface.

Soil

Desert Rose needs a fast-draining mix made for succulents. An organic succulent potting mix is suitable if it does not remain wet around the caudex. For a DIY blend, combine 2 parts Coir, 2 parts Coarse Sand, and 1 part Pumice. Always use a container with free drainage.

Feeding

Apply an organic fertilizer made for succulents every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Follow the stated strength on the fertilizer label. Do not feed dry roots or apply extra fertilizer to force flowering. Pause feeding outside the active growing season.

Temperature & humidity

Keep Desert Rose between 65 to 90 °F / 18 to 32 °C. It prefers warm, steady conditions and should be protected from cold drafts. An ideal humidity range is 30 to 40%, so average dry indoor air usually suits it better than a very humid room.

What to expect

Desert Rose reaches maturity in about 5 to 10 years. Indoors, it can eventually stand 3 to 6 ft / 0.9 to 1.8 m tall and spread 2 to 4 ft / 0.6 to 1.2 m. Growth is gradual, with the swollen base becoming more pronounced over time.
