Dragon Tree is an upright houseplant with one or several slender trunks. Narrow, sword-shaped leaves form tufts near the tops, and red edges add subtle color. Its tall, spare outline works well where floor space is limited. It is widely grown for its easy care, tree-like shape, and ability to serve as a strong vertical accent indoors.

Light requirements

Dragon Tree grows best in bright indirect light at 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹. A PAR meter or PAR meter app can check this PPFD range.

Watering

Water Dragon Tree when the top half of the soil has dried. Test several depths with a knitting needle or chopstick because the surface can dry before the lower mix.

Soil

Use a loose organic all-purpose potting mix for Dragon Tree. The blend should hold some moisture without staying saturated. For a simple DIY option, combine 3 parts Coir with 1 part Pumice, then top dress with Worm Castings. Good drainage helps protect the roots from prolonged wetness.

Feeding

Feed Dragon Tree with an organic all-purpose fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Use the product at its recommended strength and apply it to moist soil. Do not increase the dose to speed growth, and stop regular feeding during winter.

Temperature & humidity

Dragon Tree prefers temperatures of 70 to 80 °F / 21 to 27 °C. Keep it away from cold drafts and abrupt temperature changes. Aim for 40 to 50% humidity. This range fits many homes, though very dry air can contribute to crisp leaf tips.

What to expect

Dragon Tree takes about 8 to 10 years to reach maturity. A mature indoor plant can grow to 6 ft / 1.8 m tall. Its eventual spread is 2 to 3 ft / 0.6 to 0.9 m. Growth is steady but generally slow indoors.
