Indoor plant care
Thanksgiving Cactus
Schlumbergera truncata
Light requirements
Thanksgiving Cactus prefers bright, indirect light of 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹. Filtered exposure supports healthy segments and seasonal flowering.
- Position it 5 ft / 1.5m from a south, west or east-facing window.
- Keep it where there is no direct view of the sky. A sheer curtain can soften sunlight that would otherwise reach the stems.
- Harsh direct light may bleach or scorch segments. Dim light can weaken growth and reduce blooming.
- Measure photosynthetically active radiation as PPFD (μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹) with a PAR meter or PAR meter app.
Watering
Water Thanksgiving Cactus when the topsoil feels dry. Unlike many desert cacti, it should not remain bone dry for long during active growth.
- Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.
- Water across the mix until runoff appears through the drainage holes. A pot with drainage holes is essential.
- Let the container drain fully before returning it to a saucer or decorative planter. Constant saturation may cause root rot, but extended drought can wrinkle segments and leave dry, crispy edges.
- Water considerably less during winter when active growth has slowed. Always check the soil first rather than following a fixed calendar, since drying time changes with indoor conditions.
Soil
Thanksgiving Cactus needs a loose cactus medium that drains well while holding modest moisture. A specialty organic potting mix formulated for cacti is suitable when used in a pot with drainage holes.
- For a DIY blend, mix 2 parts Coir, 2 parts Coarse Sand, and 1 part Pumice. Avoid compressing the mix around the roots.
Feeding
Use an organic fertilizer formulated for cacti every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Apply it at the recommended dilution while the soil is moist. Do not feed heavily to force flowers, and pause regular applications through the slower winter season.
Temperature & humidity
Thanksgiving Cactus prefers temperatures from 60 to 75 °F / 15 to 24 °C. Its ideal humidity is 50 to 60%. Keep conditions stable and protect the plant from cold drafts or hot, dry air blowing directly over the segments.
What to expect
This cactus takes about 3 to 5 years to mature. Its eventual height is 6 to 12 in / 15 to 30 cm. Mature growth can spread 12 to 24 in / 30 to 60 cm, creating a broad, arching plant.
Varieties & cultivars
- S. truncata ‘Aurea’: Flat lime-green segments are outlined by yellow margins.
- S. truncata ‘Fritz Thüringer’: This cultivar produces vivid red flowers with a trumpet shape.
- S. truncata ‘Buckingham’: Double pink flowers form its main display.
- S. truncata ‘Snowdrop’: The flowers are pure white with yellow centers.
