Mature sizesee care guide
Ice Plant is a compact succulent with plump, angular leaves that have a distinctive triangular shape. The green foliage grows in close pairs and gives the plant a geometric look. Bright yellow, daisy-like flowers may appear in spring or summer. Its small size works well on a bright sill or plant shelf, provided the soil can dry fully between waterings.
Place it around 5 ft / 1.5m from a south, west or east-facing window.
Keep the leaves from having an open view of the sky. Filter direct sunlight with a sheer curtain when needed.
Harsh sun can scorch the angular foliage. Weak light causes stretched growth and may reduce flowering.
Use a PAR meter or PAR meter app to measure photosynthetically active radiation as PPFD in μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹.
Watering
Allow Ice Plant soil to dry completely before watering. Push a knitting needle or chopstick into the mix to test moisture at several depths. Wait if the tool comes out with damp material attached.
Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water or reverse osmosis water.
Water thoroughly until moisture runs through the drainage holes. Let the pot empty fully before returning it to a saucer or decorative planter.
Drainage holes are essential. A wet root zone can cause rot and turn the plump leaves soft or translucent.
Water considerably less in winter while growth is limited. If kept dry for too long during active growth, leaves may wrinkle and develop crisp tips.
Soil
Ice Plant needs an organic succulent mix with very fast drainage. Its thick leaves already hold water, making dense soil a risk.
DIY mix: blend 2 parts coir, 2 parts coarse sand and 1 part pumice.
Use a pot with drainage holes and avoid compressing the mixture around the roots.
Feeding
Give Ice Plant an organic succulent fertiliser every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Apply the label strength to damp soil. Do not overfeed in an effort to increase flowering, and stop routine feeding during winter.
Temperature & humidity
Ice Plant prefers 50 to 75 °F / 10 to 24 °C. Keep indoor humidity between 30 and 40%. It favors drier air than many tropical houseplants. Protect it from cold drafts and prolonged damp conditions around the foliage.
What to expect
Ice Plant reaches maturity in about 2 to 3 years and grows at a moderate pace. Its eventual height is around 8 in / 20 cm. A mature plant can spread about 12 in / 30 cm.
Varieties & cultivars
C. lehmannii ‘Variegata’ (Variegated Ice Plant): Green leaves have creamy white edging.
C. laniata (Rosy Ice Plant): Resembles the standard Ice Plant but has slightly smaller leaves. Bright light brings out a rosy-pink tint in the foliage.
