Zebra Plant is a tropical evergreen shrub with dark green leaves crossed by bold white or yellow veins. The sharp contrast resembles zebra stripes and gives the plant year-round interest. Under suitable indoor conditions, upright spikes of bright yellow flowers may appear. This intermediate-care houseplant suits growers who can maintain even moisture, warmth, and humidity. It is less forgiving of dry soil and sudden environmental changes than many foliage plants.

Light requirements
Zebra Plant prefers bright, indirect light in the 150 to 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹ range. Filtered exposure supports bold vein color and potential flowering.
Place it 5 ft / 1.5m from a south, west or east-facing window.
Choose a spot without a direct view of the sky. Use a sheer curtain when direct sunlight cannot be avoided.
Harsh sun may bleach or scorch leaves. Low light can weaken growth and prevent flower spikes.
Measure photosynthetically active radiation as PPFD (μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹) with a PAR meter or PAR meter app.
Watering
Keep Zebra Plant soil consistently moist but never soggy. Check it often, since this tropical shrub does not respond well to complete drying.
Test moisture at different depths with a knitting needle or chopstick before adding more water.
Use room temperature rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water. Water thoroughly until runoff exits through the drainage holes.
Drain the container completely before placing it on a saucer or in a decorative planter. Standing water can cause root rot, while dry soil may lead to wilted leaves and crispy brown edges.
Water considerably less during winter when active growth slows, but do not allow the root ball to become fully dry.
Soil
Zebra Plant needs an organic all-purpose potting mix that holds steady moisture while still draining freely. A container with drainage holes is essential.
To make a suitable mix, combine 3 parts Coir with 1 part Pumice.
Add Worm Castings as a top dressing. Keep the medium loose, since compacted soil limits drainage and root aeration.
Feeding
Apply an organic all-purpose fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks from March through October. Use the recommended dilution and feed when the soil is moist. Do not overfeed to force flowers, and pause regular fertilizer use during winter.
Temperature & humidity
Zebra Plant prefers temperatures of 60 to 75 ºF / 15 to 23 ºC. Its humidity range is broad at 40 to 80%. More humid air can help protect the foliage, but good airflow and stable warmth remain important.
What to expect
Zebra Plant reaches maturity in about 2 to 3 years. Its eventual height is 2 to 4 ft / 0.6 to 1.2 m. A mature plant may spread 1 to 2 ft / 30 to 60 cm.
Varieties & cultivars
A. squarrosa ‘Leopoldii’: Broad leaves have strong white veins. Gold flowers with red bracts appear in partial to full shade.
A. squarrosa ‘Louisae’: Deep green leaves show yellow veins, while gold bracts surround the flowers.
