Jewel Orchid is grown mainly for its richly patterned foliage. Velvety leaves range from dark green to almost black and carry pinkish-orange veins. Once a year, the plant typically sends up long spikes of small white flowers. Its compact shape works well in a warm indoor display. It suits growers who value leaves over large blooms and can provide an airy orchid mix.

Light requirements

Jewel Orchid prefers bright, indirect light between 150 and 250 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹.

Watering

Water Jewel Orchid when the topsoil feels dry. Test with a finger before adding water, but do not leave the entire root zone dry for an extended period. Its roots need moisture balanced with plenty of air.

Soil

Jewel Orchid needs a specialty organic orchid potting mix with large, airy particles. Fast drainage protects the roots while bark holds limited moisture between waterings.

Feeding

Apply an organic orchid fertiliser every 2 to 4 weeks from March to October. Feed Jewel Orchid at the recommended strength and only when the root mix is damp. Avoid strong applications, and pause routine feeding during the slower winter period.

Temperature & humidity

Jewel Orchid prefers 70 to 80 °F / 21 to 26 °C. Maintain humidity between 50 and 70%. Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. Gentle airflow helps when humidity stays near the upper part of that range.

What to expect

Jewel Orchid reaches maturity in about 2 to 3 years and grows at a moderate pace. Its eventual height is 6 to 12 in / 15 to 30 cm. A mature clump spreads 8 to 12 in / 20 to 30 cm.
